Mayon Volcano (Eruption 2009) lowered to Alert Level 1

The following observations suggest that Mayon Volcano’s condition is improving and likely heading towards normalcy. In view thereof, PHIVOLCS is now lowering its alert status from Alert Level 2 to Alert Level 1, meaning that eruption is not imminent. The public, however, is reminded that the 6-km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) remains off-limits due to the continuing threat from sudden small explosions and rock falls from the upper and middle slopes of the volcano. Active river channels and those areas perennially identified as lahar prone in the southeast sector should also be avoided especially during bad weather conditions or when there is heavy and prolonged rainfall.

Jets Trade Kerry Rhodes to Arizona Cardinals

On Friday, Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum said the Jets would pay a $2 million roster bonus next week to keep safety Kerry Rhodes on the team. Then he uttered the key words: “unless something happens.”

Something happened. On Saturday night, the Jets agreed in principle to trade Rhodes to the Arizona Cardinals, who needed a safety to fill the hole left by the departure of the Pro Bowler Antrel Rolle for the Giants. The Jets will receive a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft and a seventh-rounder in 2011.

Rhodes (6 feet 3 inches, 209 pounds) is bigger than Rolle (6 feet, 202), but is not a good tackler and struggles in coverage.

Earthquake Update: New fears spread as aftershocks rattle Chile

A first 6.2-magnitude aftershock jolted people awake at 0920 GMT, yesterday just six days after the 8.8-magnitude quake which, along with the tsunami, left more than 800 people dead and some two million homeless.

That was followed by a 6.8-magnitude tremor — one of the strongest of more than 200 to rattle Chile since the weekend — and another measuring 6.6. Some damaged buildings in Concepcion, the country’s second city and worst affected by the big quake, collapsed, but the national emergency services said the aftershocks caused no injuries or serious damage.

Aftershocks weaken Chile's quake-damaged buildings (Videos, Pictures, Photos)

At least seven significant aftershocks shook Chile on Saturday, the largest with a preliminary magnitude of 5.1, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

No additional damage or injuries were immediately reported, but aftershocks have dangerously weakened buildings all across the disaster zone, including a 22-story office tower whose now-exposed upper floors have partly pancacked and threaten to crash down onto downtown Concepcion. The city's mayor has announced at least five contracts for controlled demolitions of such buildings.

At least 500,000 homes were destroyed, but the figure could reach 1.5 million once surveys are complete, Housing Minister Patricia Poblete said.

Chile earthquake alters Earth axis, makes days shorter (Video, Picture, Photo)

Magnitude 8.8 is a massive earthquake. If NASA is correct and the Earth’s axis has shifted, then the planet’s rotation could be permanently affected by the redistribution of mass. Scientists believe this means shorter days, but only slightly: 1.26 microseconds shorter, they estimate. One microsecond is one-millionth of a second, which is not enough time to mess with your beauty sleep or make you late for work. But the global impact is still amazing to contemplate.
