Chile earthquake alters Earth axis, makes days shorter (Video, Picture, Photo)

Magnitude 8.8 is a massive earthquake. If NASA is correct and the Earth’s axis has shifted, then the planet’s rotation could be permanently affected by the redistribution of mass. Scientists believe this means shorter days, but only slightly: 1.26 microseconds shorter, they estimate. One microsecond is one-millionth of a second, which is not enough time to mess with your beauty sleep or make you late for work. But the global impact is still amazing to contemplate.

6.1 Earthquake jolts Northern Philippines (Luzon), no damage (Pictures, Maps)

MANILA, March 2 (Reuters) - An earthquake measuring 6.1 struck the Philippines' northernmost region on Tuesday, but there were no immediate reports of damage, the state seismology agency said.

The quake was felt in Cagayan and Isabela provinces around 10:51 a.m. [0251 GMT], an official at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.
