The Flat-Earth Fallacy

When Fantasy and Science Collide

Terry Pratchett and his Discworld series of novels may seem like fantasy to most of us, but to some the vision of a flat disc-like world is a reality…
Incredibly, right now in the 21st Century, there is a growing surge in popularity for the belief that the Earth is flat. Once dismissed as irrational fools that would eventually go away, they are now starting to fight back with ever increasing complexity in their arguments to support their misguided conviction. They say that society has been misled by government conspiracy into believing that the Earth is a globe, although the reasons for why such a conspiracy would be needed are a little less clear. The most common hypothesis put forward seems to be that it is in order to continue faking space travel and embezzle the funds left over.
Think about it for a moment… how many people would need to be in on this cover-up?
Pilots, astronauts, governments, Elon Musk and his SpaceX Company and all its employees, meteorologists and the whole scientific community would need to be collaborating on this, not to mention most of their family members.
The Russian Roscomos Space Agency and America’s NASA, have apparently been so successful in fooling society that the Earth is round that China, Europe and India have started their own space programs, and have joined in on the conspiracy.
You couldn’t make it up. Well luckily, you don’t have to because the Flat Earth Society has done it all for you. You can visit this website here and gaze at it in awe, possibly in much the same way as you would watch a chimp’s tea party, or watch me attempting to dance gracefully.

Trolls or Genuine?

After initially discovering this ever growing community of the Flat Earth Theory on social media, I assumed they were just another version of online trolls. It wasn’t until I read some of the comments that I realised they genuinely believed what they were saying, although I am sure some of them are just doing it to amuse themselves and laugh at the outraged replies to their comments. It’s almost like coming across a fully grown man who believes in Santa Claus and who has managed to make a rationale for every law of physics such a mythical character would need to break in order to deliver on his role.
It’s almost like coming across a fully grown man who believes in Santa Claus and who has managed to make a rationale for every law of physics such a mythical character would need to break in order to deliver on his role.
Celebrities are starting to be rolled out by the Flat Earth Society too.
Shaquille O’Neal, the former NBA basketball star and B.O.B. whose real name is Bobby Ray Simmons Jr a rap artist, are two of the most well-known of these. Rumours originating from a spoof website that President Donald Trump is a proponent are false, however.
So, enough of my incredulity, let’s have a look at some of the claims that ‘prove’ the Earth is a flat disc and not a globe at all…

The Claims

  • Gravity is a lie.
  • There is no curvature of the horizon.
  • Satellites are a hoax and photographs of the Earth are photo-shopped, whilst Computer Generated Imagery is used to create videos of the planet’s global look.
  • Water would fall off the planet’s surface if we are spinning on a globe.
  • Space agencies are in reality using their huge budget to control missiles from space.
  • The Arctic Circle is the centre of the disc and Antarctica is a 150-foot high wall of ice at the outer rim of the disc.
  • NASA employees guard the rim.
  • The sun and the moon are spheres (!) that move in circular motions 3,000 miles above the Earth, creating night and day.
  • Albert Einstein was a fraud.
  • An ‘Anti-moon’ causes eclipses

Prepare for the Supermoon, the biggest, brightest full Moon of the year (Aquarid meteor shower)

So what makes tomorrow night's Moon a SUPERmoon? Four things:
1. As of 11:35 p.m. EST, the moon will officially be completely full.
2. Saturday's full Moon happens to coincide with the Moon's closest approach to the Earth for the month, an event astronomers refer to as "perigee."
3. Tomorrow's perigee will actually be the closest to Earth in all of 2012 (some perigees are closer than others), making tomorrow's Moon a super-supermoon!
4. Unrelenting media coverage.

Health Effect of Radiation Exposure Poisoning (Sickness): Questions and Answers

(Adds comparison with Chernobyl, mechanisms of radiation spread, cesium risk.)

March 15 (Bloomberg) -- The danger of radiation leaks from Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant is rising after explosions at the site caused by Japan’s earthquake and tsunami, Prime Minister Naoto Kan said today.

As of 10:22 a.m. local time, radiation as high as 400 millisieverts was detected at the plant’s No. 3 reactor, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said at a briefing. That’s 20 times the annual limit for nuclear industry employees and uranium miners, according to the World Nuclear Association, a London-based advocate for the nuclear energy industry. A radiation dose of 100 millisieverts a year is the lowest level at which any increase in cancer is evident, the London-based WNA said on its website.

New Goldilocks Planet Called Gliese 581G Found At 20 Light Years Away

Scientists have found a new planet called Gliese 581g and this made them all go crazy: why? Because it’s the first really truly Goldilocks planet. The Gliese 581g planet has an atmosphere, gravity, and the average temperature is -12 degrees Celsius. Yeah, it’s cold, but life is possible there.

The only problem for humans is that this planet is 20 light years away. For humans, but for astronomers this is not that far and they actually say that it’s very close. The Gliese 581g orbits around a red dwarf star called Gliese 581 or Gliza.

Apple TV | New iPod Touch 4th Generation | New iPod Nano 2010 | New iPod Shuffle

The new Apple TV for $99
.

The new Apple TV will be streaming 720p video only (no big surprise there), and that existing Apple TVs won't be getting an upgrade to the new cloud-based software (again, not a shocker).

The new operating system for the iPhone and iPod Touch will also have a new photo feature called High Dynamic Range (HDR) Photos.

It has HDMI, Ethernet, optical audio, and USB plugs around back, and of course 802.11n for the cable-averse.

A demo of a new game - currently called "project sword" - was shown as part of the Game Center unveiling. The role-playing game, which features sword battles, is being developed by Epic Games and will be available on the iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad.

The new line of iPods will feature a built in FM tuner that can also display photos. The iPod will also now be completely touch screen, and will not have any buttons on the device itself. It will cost a total of $149 for the 8 GB version of the iPod and $179 for the 16 GB version.

The AirTunes software is being renamed AirPlay, and will allow users to switch video streaming from an iPad or iPhone to an Apple TV device.

The new Shuffles will cost $49 and come with 2 gigabytes of memory and a 15-hour battery life.

New iPod Shuffle The new Shuffle can speak the names of playlists and songs, and unlike the most recent version, it brings back the square shape and buttons of Apple's second-generation Shuffle. The new Shuffles will cost $49 and come with 2 gigabytes of memory and a 15-hour battery life.

New iPod nano

New iPod nano The Nano is getting a new look that puts it more in line with the iPod Touch functionality, as the new Nano will feature a touchscreen with controls for playing, pausing, and selecting music. The new device is also much smaller - almost half the size and weight as the previous generation of the device. It will also have a built-in FM tuner and will be able to display photos.

Bloom Box and Bloom Energy Are Innovative and Exciting

Bloom Box and Bloom Energy are innovative and exciting to those who are excited about the possibilities that await from this fuel cell driven generator. One small cube could provide power for a home. Of course, the Bloom Box technology is still cost prohibitive, with only large companies and the ultra wealthy able to afford it.

However, in the future this could all change. Imagine being able to not have to rely on the power grid!

The Bloom Box is also thought of as an "energy server" using a fuel cell. However, the Bloom Box isn't your run-of-the-mill fuel cell. Per their official Web site, the Bloom Energy fuel cell differs from a regular fuel cell in 4 main ways. They are:

  1. Low cost materials – our cells use a common sand-like powder instead of precious
metals like platinum or corrosive materials like acids.
  2. High electrical efficiency – we can convert fuel into electricity at nearly twice the
    rate of some legacy technologies
  3. Fuel flexibility – our systems are capable of using either renewable or fossil fuels
  4. Reversible – our technology is capable of both energy generation and storage
So while the technology isn't widely available now, in the future the hope is that it will become available. It's a lofty dream for certain, but one that we simply can't afford to ignore.

Structure Of The Sun's Magnetic Field

Source: European Space Agency
Date: March 25, 2007
More on:

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/03/070323132406.htm

Science Daily Hinode, the newest solar observatory on the space scene, has obtained never-before-seen images showing that the sun's magnetic field is much more turbulent and dynamic than previously known.

This image of the solar 'chromosphere' was obtained on on 20 November 2006 by the Hinode solar observatory, and reveals the structure of the solar magnetic field rising vertically from a sunspot (an area of strong magnetic field), outward into the solar atmopshere. The chromosphere a thin 'layer' of solar atmosphere 'sandwiched' between the sun's visible surface (or photosphere) and its outer atmosphere (or corona). The chromosphere is the source of ultra violet radiation. (Credit: Hinode JAXA/NASA/PPARC)

Hinode, Japanese for 'sunrise', was launched on 23 September 2006 to study the sun's magnetic field and how its explosive energy propagates through the different layers of the solar atmosphere.

"For the first time, we are now able to make out tiny granules of hot gas that rise and fall in the sun's magnified atmosphere," said Dick Fisher, director of NASA's Heliophysics Division. "These images will open up a new era of study on some of the sun's processes that effect Earth, astronauts, orbiting satellites and the solar system."

Hinode's three primary instruments, the Solar Optical Telescope, the X-ray Telescope and the Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer, are observing the different layers of the sun. Studies focus on the solar atmosphere from the photosphere - the visible surface of the sun, to the corona - the outer atmosphere that extends outward into the solar system.

Thanks to coordinated measurements from the three instruments, Hinode is already showing how changes in the structure of the magnetic field and the release of magnetic energy in the low atmosphere spread outward through the corona and into interplanetary space.

"The release of magnetic energy is at the base of space weather," says Bernhard Fleck, ESA's SOHO and Hinode Project Scientist. "Complementing the SOHO data with those of Hinode will allow us to improve our understanding of the violent processes on the Sun that drive space storms. The synergies between the two missions will clearly boost our space weather forecasting capabilities."

Space weather involves the production of energetic particles and the emissions of electromagnetic radiation. These bursts of energy can black out long-distance communications over entire continents and disrupt the global navigational system.

"Hinode images are revealing irrefutable evidence for the presence of turbulence-driven processes that are bringing magnetic fields, on all scales, to the sun's surface, resulting in an extremely dynamic chromosphere or gaseous envelope around the sun," said Alan Title, a corporate senior fellow at Lockheed Martin, Palo Alto, California, and consulting professor of physics at Stanford University, Stanford, California.

By following the evolution of the solar structures that outline the magnetic field before, during and after these explosive events, scientists hope to find clear evidence to establish that magnetic reconnection – a process whereby magnetic field lines from different magnetic domains are spliced to one another and cause a reconfiguration of the magnetic field - is the underlying cause for this explosive activity.

Science #1: NASA Studies How Airborne Particles Affect Climate Change

Source: NASA Ames Research Center
Date: March 18, 2007
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/03/070317131918.htm

Science Daily — A recent NASA study links natural and human-made aerosol particles to how much Earth warms or cools. Earth's atmosphere acts as a protective shield that regulates how much solar energy the planet absorbs or deflects. The Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment studied how chemicals and pollution affect that protective shield by measuring air flowing from North America and across the Atlantic Ocean.

Aerosol particles (haze particles suspended in the atmosphere, generally smaller than cloud droplets) affect climate by changing the flow of radiant energy from the sun to the Earth's surfaces and within the atmosphere. They do this both directly, by scattering and absorbing solar radiation, and indirectly, by changing cloud properties, rain, snow, and atmospheric mixing. Aerosol particles are extremely varied, in part because they have very many sources, both manmade and natural (e.g., car exhaust, power plants, forest fires, evaporation from petroleum products, agriculture, natural living plants, dust storms, breaking ocean waves, volcanoes). (Credit: Image courtesy of International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on Transport and Transformation (ICARTT))

"The majority of aerosols form a layer of haze near the Earth's surface, which can cause either a cooling or warming effect, depending on aerosol type and location," said Jens Redemann, lead author of the science paper at NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif.

Different types of aerosol particles can influence visible light and other kinds of radiation, affecting climate and temperatures, the scientists reported. "Changing the flow of radiation – including light – above and within the atmosphere changes the energy available for driving Earth's climate," said Phil Russell, also a NASA Ames scientist.

"Our study measured how aerosols change the flow of solar energy," Russell said. This solar energy includes visible light and also radiation at shorter and longer wavelengths in the ultraviolet and infrared ranges.

To find out the extent to which tiny particles in the air could affect climate, NASA scientists flew in a low-flying aircraft over the dark waters of the Gulf of Maine. Two types of instruments on the aircraft measured radiation from the sun.

Radiometers – devices that measure the intensity of radiant energy – measured total solar energy coming from all directions. At the same time, a sun photometer – an instrument that measures the intensity of the sun’s light – measured sunlight coming directly, straight from the sun through the atmosphere. The quantity of aerosols in the atmosphere between the sun photometer and the sun is proportional to the difference between the light intensity measured by the sun photometer and the amount of light that would pass through an aerosol-free atmosphere.

Combining measurements of total solar light intensity from all directions, solar light intensity directly, straight from the sun, and the amount of aerosols in the atmospheric column, scientists can estimate how much of the sun’s energy is scattered (redirected) and absorbed (causes heating) by atmospheric aerosols. These measurements are useful to climate scientists as a reality check for computer climate models.
