Chile sharply lowers quake death toll to 279

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - Chile's government on Thursday sharply revised down the death toll from a massive weekend earthquake and ensuing tsunamis to 279 people from a previously reported 802 but gave no explanation.

Jack Nicklaus expects Tiger Woods to play in Masters

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - With reports that Tiger Woods has resumed hitting golf balls at home, the man whose records he's chasing said he wouldn't be surprised to see the 14-time major winner return in time to play the Masters Tournament.

"It would surprise me if he didn't," said Jack Nicklaus on Tuesday after playing in a pro-am at PGA National. "Oh yeah, I can't imagine in a hundred years he's going to miss Augusta."

Taiwan Struck by Magnitude-6.4 Quake; 64 Injured (Update5)

March 4 (Bloomberg) -- A magnitude-6.4 earthquake struck southern Taiwan, injuring 64 people and disrupting production at two of the island’s largest technology companies.

The quake hit at 8:18 a.m. local time today, 56 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of Kaohsiung, a city of 1.5 million people, the Central Weather Bureau said on its Web site. The quake’s depth was 5 kilometers and was followed by more than 20 aftershocks of magnitudes of as much as 5.7.

Earthquake Update: Filipinos (Pinoys) safe in Taiwan

The Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) in Taiwan on Thursday assured that all Filipinos in Taiwan are safe despite a 6.4-magnitude earthquake that rocked the area Thursday morning. Taiwan is home to 75,000 Filipinos.

MECO resident representative Antonio Basilio said that there were no reported casualties from the Taiwan earthquake.

More than 15 Aftershocks from earthquake shake Taiwan (Video)

Aftershocks rattled southern Taiwan in the hours after a magnitude 6.4 earthquake shook the island, but left it relatively unscathed.

Thursday morning's quake was followed by more than 15 aftershocks, the largest reaching 4.8.

Powerful 6.4-Magnitude Earthquake Rocked Southern Taiwan (Pictures, Maps, Photos)

TAIPEI, Taiwan — A powerful 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Taiwan on Thursday, terrifying residents, disrupting communications and triggering at least one large fire. Twelve people were injured, the National Fire Agency said.

No tsunami alert was issued. The quake was centered in the same mountainous region of rural Kaohsiung county that endured the brunt of the damage from Typhoon Morakot, a devastating storm that killed about 700 people last August.
