Ecuador's president attacked by police; government declares state of emergency

Country's leader trapped in hospital after assault, as government declares a one-week state of emergency.

Ecuador teetered on the brink of chaos early today as rebellious police officers protesting against austerity measures blocked airports and roads, occupied the national assembly and besieged the president in a hospital after physically assaulting him.

The government called the revolt a coup and declared a one-week state of emergency which put the military in charge of public order and suspended civil liberties. Peru shut its border with Ecuador.

"This is a coup attempt," President Rafael Correa told state-run Ecuador TV from the hospital where, outside, civilian supporters confronted mutinous police amid scenes of near anarchy.

Former SAP Chief Leo Apotheker named as CEO of Hewlett Packard

Hewlett Packard (HP) has assigned Leo Apotheker as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Apotheker was CEO of SAP until February when he resigned after SAP decided not to renew his contract.

Apotheker was only solely in charge of SAP for 7 months. (He was co-CEO for a year prior.) He was with SAP for 20 years.

New Goldilocks Planet Called Gliese 581G Found At 20 Light Years Away

Scientists have found a new planet called Gliese 581g and this made them all go crazy: why? Because it’s the first really truly Goldilocks planet. The Gliese 581g planet has an atmosphere, gravity, and the average temperature is -12 degrees Celsius. Yeah, it’s cold, but life is possible there.

The only problem for humans is that this planet is 20 light years away. For humans, but for astronomers this is not that far and they actually say that it’s very close. The Gliese 581g orbits around a red dwarf star called Gliese 581 or Gliza.

Ateneo Blue Eagles win over FEU Tamaraws, 65-62; achieve rare grand slam feat in UAAP

Ateneo Blue Eagles emerged triumphant as they obtained a rare three-peat championship against the FEU Tamaraws, 65-62, in Game 2 of the Best of Three series in the 2010 UAAP Finals of Men's basketball tournament. The game was witnessed by almost 18,000 crowd in the Araneta Coliseum as the Blue Eagles swept the Tamaraws 2-0. Ryan Buenafe hit a three-pointer in the last 20 seconds of the game to increase their lead to five, 64-59.

It was a total team effort by the Ateneans as they became the fifth team to get a rare grand slam feat. The other four teams were UE, DLSU, UST and FEU. It was a double celebration for Ateneo as their junior team also captured a rare grand slam which was led by the Finals MVP Kiefer Ravena, the son of former PBA Rookie of the Year Bong Ravena.
